Transitional Kindergarten

Information & Admissions Policy

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two-year Kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate for young 5-year olds. TK is offered to parents who elect a two-year program to ensure academic and social development success within a school setting. Children applying to enroll in TK must pass a readiness assessment prior to admissions to determine if they are socially and emotionally ready to learn within an academic elementary school learning environment.

Students admitted into the TK program should be at least 5 years old by December 31 of the attending school year. Kindergarten enrollment requires students to be 5 years old by Sept. 1. SKDA requires an assessment for developmental readiness for both TK and K applicants.

Our full-day TK class is taught by a qualified teacher team that meets CA credentialing requirements. SKDA’s TK program is not an alternative for 4-year old preschool, pre-K, or a child development / daycare program. Children must be independent enough to dress and feed themselves, tie shoes, speak English, and follow verbal instructions of adult authority figures.

WHY CHOOSE TK IF YOUR CHILD IS READY FOR SCHOOL?

Look at the data:

All students who attended our TK & Kindergarten classes are scoring and achieving above grade level by the standardized testing window in May. In 2018, all Kindergarten students who completed our TK program are reading at Grade 1, 2 or 3 level. The same is true for Math achievement!
